“I work for the British embassy in Damascus as a Public Affairs Manager and this is an enjoyable part of my life. I am happy to have such an interesting job.”

Roula studied Economics at Damascus University, and only a few days ago celebrated completing her Masters of Business Administration (MBA) through the UK’s Open University after three-and-a-half years of studying.

“It was a challenge, of course, studying and working at the same time. But it was amazing and I would encourage everyone to find the time to do it, especially while working, because it is interesting to see the integration between practice, learning and theory. I am grateful that the British embassy, my employer, has given me the chance to pursue my MBA studies,” she said.

What is your idea of a successful career?

Loving what you are doing is the key to success I think. It is all about having a clear idea of what difference a person would like to make and doing your best to develop skills throughout this process.
I believe that change is a factor of life; everybody changes, as do our likes and dislikes. Something we loved doing two years ago may now give us displeasure. So we should always take time to reflect on the things in our lives - not just in our jobs - that we feel most strongly about. We should learn to be more responsive, flexible and creative.

If you could, what one thing would you change in Syrian society?

I would love to see everyone caring about the environment. It is good to see that there is now more awareness of this issue. More organizations are working on environmental projects. I hope we keep this up. It is our future.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy engaging with different stakeholders, learning about their activities, and thinking of project ideas to build on their good work.

The British embassy, through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom, funds developmental projects for Syrian governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations to track their efforts on reforms in the country. I love my job because I can see the change that a project makes and the impact it has on people's lives.
