Reading for a better life
Firdos launches a Lattakia campaign to engage local communities in the habit of readingThe Fund for Integrated Rural Development of Syria (FIRDOS), a project of the Syria Trust for Development, recently launched a campaign to encourage reading in rural Lattakia, in order to promote the habit of reading as a means of access to information, and as a capacity-building tool.
This campaign includes interactive theater performances aimed at increasing awareness about the importance of reading through different events with the help of a team of specialists in interactive theater.
In addition, a mobile library will be launched to provide local communities with access to books and other sources of information which will promote individual self-development and improve living conditions, through FIRDOS’ long experience in the management of mobile libraries in rural areas.
The use of animated interactive techniques in theater performances will help to reinforce reading habits among children, adults and adolescents. Cultural activities for children related to reading, such as “Read & Draw” and “Write your Story,” will also be initiated, in parallel to the interactive theater performances. These activities will continue over a period of four days in the above-mentioned villages.
It is worth mentioning that FIRDOS will be implementing the Rural Reading Campaign in collaboration with local communities. This participatory approach aims to promote community ownership of the program, as well as to ensure the sustainability of this initiative in collaboration with bodies of Syrian society, the private sector, the governmental sector and international organizations.
